Speech by President He Zhenwei at “Investment Opportunities in Energy Sector of Nepal”
Your Excellency Ambassador Bishnu Pukar Shrestha,
Ladies and Gentlemen, Friends,
Good Afternoon.
First of all, on behalf of the China Overseas Development Association, I would like to warmly welcome all of you to today's “Investment Opportunities in Energy Sector of Nepal” Conference, and express my respect and heartfelt thanks to the Nepalese Ambassador to China, His Excellency Bishnu Shrestha, and the officials of the Nepal Investment Commission and the Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation of Nepal who have prepared for this conference.
On October 12th to 13th , 2019, during Chinese President Xi Jinping's state visit to Nepal, China and Nepal issued the Joint statement between the People's Republic of China and Nepal. President Xi Jinping and President Bhandari jointly announced that they would work together in the spirit of win-win cooperation, establish a strategic cooperative partnership between China and Nepal for development and prosperity from generation to generation. This latest statement not only points out the direction for the future development of bilateral relations, but also endows China-Nepal relations with more important regional influence.
In recent years, the economic and trade exchanges between two countries have become increasingly close, and Nepal has become an important channel for China to enter the South Asian market. Located at the foot of the Himalayas, Nepal is rich in water resources. There are 6,000 rivers in the country, which have rich potential for hydropower generation. The hydropower reserves are estimated to reach 83,000 megawatts, of which 43,000 megawatts can be developed. It is reported that the current development volume is less than 1000 MW, the development rate is relatively low, and there is still great potential in the future. At today’s conference, we have not only representatives of power generation enterprises such as China Huaneng Group Co., Ltd. and China Huadian Corporation Ltd., but also representatives of transmission and distribution enterprises such as China Southern Power Grid Co., Ltd, as well as representatives of the engineering companies such as CMEC Co.,Ltd., CGGC International Ltd, CSIC International Engineering Co., Ltd., I believe that the participation of these Chinese enterprises will bring new development to Nepal's energy sector.
Distinguished guests, this year marks the 20th anniversary of establishment of CODA, during the past 20 years, under the guidance of the National Development and Reform Commission of China, the China Overseas Development Association has long been committed to providing platform services for Chinese enterprises to “go global”, jointly build the Belt and Road Initiative and attract foreign investment, especially in boosting overseas investment and focusing on international production capacity cooperation, we have accumulated certain practical experience and good social reputation. Over the years, CODA has maintained close contact with the Embassy of Nepal in China, and has done a lot of meaningful work for the development of enterprises in the two countries. In March 2019, I led a Chinese business delegation to visit Nepal and attend the Nepal Investment Summit. During this visit, we successfully helped a member company, Tibet Kunhua Agricultural Development Co., Ltd. to land an agricultural industrial park in Nepal. At present, the industrial park project is running well, which has played a certain demonstration role for the cooperation between China and Nepal in the field of agriculture. In addition, the landing of the project had also successfully done the cross-border direct investment business of RMB in Nepal, effectively playing a role in cross-border RMB business, remarked the real landing of RMB in Nepal.
Ladies and gentlemen, in order to better serve domestic enterprises to go global, CODA and China Development Bank (CDB) established the China Overseas Investment Fair, has been held for 12 sessions, representatives of government agencies and envoys stationed in China from more than 100 countries participate in each session, and it also creates an excellent opportunity for many Chinese companies to negotiate one-on-one with overseas institutions to connect with investment project information, enabling companies to obtain more investment information. On June 16th this year, we will hold the 13th COIFAIRE at the Beijing International Hotel Conference Center, this year coincides with the 10th anniversary of the "Belt and Road" initiative proposed by President Xi Jinping, and the theme of this year's COIFAIR is determined to be "Belt and Road Initiative -- A New Decade, New Investment, New Development". I would like to take this opportunity, on behalf of CODA, sincerely invite H.E. Ambassador Bishnu Shrestha, government officials and business representatives from Nepal, as well as all guests present, to attend the conference and discuss international cooperation and mutual benefit development.
